Physical Therapy Simplified: “The Highs & Lows”
Healthcare today is all about quick fixes. It’s marketing and snake oil trying to “hack” the human body. Unfortunately (or fortunately), the body is smarter than you think. Rehab and recovering from an injury is never as easy as “replacing parts,” taking a magic pill/supplement or cold plunge/sauna/red light wizardry. Of course, I’m not saying NEVER do these things but remember the rehab and physical therapy process is one of ups/downs or highs/lows.
“It depends” is the most true statement in healthcare or physical therapy. We are all different. We each have our experiences, stories, stressors and even healing times. Pain is complex, don’t expect it to get better day by day or week by week. It very well could, but don’t be surprised if you have an “off” day or a flare up of sorts. Realize that this is normal. You aren’t broken.
Be ok with it, embrace it, accept it and adjust accordingly. As long as there are no glaring red flags medically, you will be ok. Game plan with your physical therapist, let them know, they can modify things or let you know what you should or shouldn’t be doing. And if they don’t have the time to modify things or talk to you about what’s going on, find another one. You’re the patient so you have the power.
Until next time,
