PT Handbook Tips: Make Love to Your Injury

Remember the old “RICE” acronym for injuries? It’s a bit outdated I would say. There are so many more factors that go into the healing of an injury. The acronym of “PEACE & LOVE” shown below encompasses more of these factors, including psychosocial factors. In case you haven’t heard, sleep/stress/relationships/jobs etc. all can play a part in pain mitigation/magnification.

This acronym was shown in a blog post by the British Journal of Sports Medicine (https://blogs.bmj.com/bjsm/2019/04/26/soft-tissue-injuries-simply-need-peace-love/) and it is something I show to patients quite frequently when they ask about icing/NSAID’s. This needs to replace the old school “RICE” method. So spread the word! Let everyone know injuries need some PEACE and LOVE :)

Until next time,
