Physical Therapy Tips: “Move or Die”
“Inactivity is accelerated death,” is one thing one of my professors in physical therapy school used to always say. And it’s true. There’s many things that come into play when it comes to poor health but not moving is definitely a huge one. And it’s one that us physical therapists can help with :)
Sometimes I get patients that work long hours in the office, sitting, staring, wondering and “working.” Inactivity makes injuries and pain worse. There is no circulation or blood flow to decrease the sensitive area. Not moving is terrible advice, so don’t listen if someone tells you not to move with pain.
There’s studies indicating that even increasing your activity level by 10 mins can greatly impact overall health and lifespan. Typically I have patients set timers or reminders every 20-30 mins to get up and walk, go up some stairs or do their prescribed physical therapy exercises. It’s very simple yet effective. Park a longer distance and walk more, don’t sit as much, do some stretches your physical therapist prescribed you or do a quick exercise you find fun. It gets your brain more focused and gets you feeling less painful/stiff overall. Yes it really is that easy. If you need help let us know :)
Until next time,
