PT Handbook Conversation: The Biggest Myth About Posture

Moving more is more important than your posture

We've all heard it. Maybe growing up, or maybe from an old school physical therapist or chiro...

"Don't slouch."

"Your posture is causing your pain."

uh huh...sure....

But here's the truth: There's no such thing as one "perfect" posture.

As a physical therapist, one of the biggest misconceptions I see is the idea that sitting or standing in a certain position is automatically harmful.

Our bodies are designed to move. The problem usually isn't that you slouched for a few minutes.

It's staying in any one position for too long. Prolonged or static postures without movement or circulation is much worse.

Even the "perfect" posture becomes uncomfortable if you never change it. Instead of chasing perfect posture, focus on moving more often.

Stand up. Walk around. Change positions. Strength train. Do a couple push ups or air squats. Walk up and down your stairs at work. MOVE...

Your body is incredibly adaptable, and variety is one of the best things you can give it.

Posture isn't the enemy, lack of movement or no movement variety is. There is strong evidence in modern rehab science that posture is NOT that important when it comes to pain.

Question for you...

When it comes to your posture or how you think about it, what's the biggest challenge you deal with?

Do you sit at a desk all day?
Or have you been told your posture is the reason you're in pain?

Hit reply and let me know. I read every email that comes in, and I'd genuinely love to hear what you're dealing with.

The takeaway:

The best posture isn't one position. It's your next position. In other words...move more! Your body will be happier...I promise.
