PT Handbook Conversation: 4 Evidence Based Ways to Reduce Your Risk of Injury
These are 3 ways to reduce your risk, it’s not entirely possible to never get injured or perfectly prevent injury. So it’s better to think of ways to mitigate this as best as possible. Let’s jump in:
Load Management- Load refers to stressors on the body (physical/emotional/psychological). The easy ones are the variables of exercise we can control such as intensity, volume and frequency. Structure these appropriately and you will lessen your chances of injury. In other words, do your best to structure these to optimize recovery and also load enough to create a positive adaptation (more strength and muscle for example). Also, remember load can refer to psychological stressors on the body, this also loads or stresses your body. And if this loads you too much it can slow recovery and cause increased muscle tension (raising risk of injury). Find ways to manage this as well (work with a qualified professional if needed).
Well Structured Warm-Up- Don’t skip your warm-up. A good warm-up increases blood flow, you overall core body temperature and prepares your muscles/joints and nervous system for your sport or the gym, all this reduces your injury chances. I wrote a previous email about how to structure your warm up before. So check it out in the archive :)
Sleep- Your body does most of its repair and recovery while you sleep. It's our most natural performance enhancer. Enough said.
