PT Handbook: Pain Does Not Mean Stop

It's ok to exercise through pain...

Welcome! The PT Handbook is a physical therapy newsletter discussing all things physical therapy/sports medicine. This newsletter is an extension of our philosophy at Art of PT Sports Physical Therapy LLC where our patient population includes exercise lovers and active individuals. We are a PT private practice that prides itself on providing true one on one service. Not like the big corporate physical therapy companies.

This handbook will provide practical PT tips and dive into hot topics surrounding the sports rehab world. If you have questions about the field of physical therapy or need to schedule an appointment (virtual/in person), contact us with the link below!

PT Handbook Conversation: Pain Doesn’t Mean Stop

One of the most common misconceptions I hear in the clinic is that pain means you should stop moving altogether. But really, when you’re recovering from an injury, not all pain is harmful. In fact, some discomfort is expected, and even necessary, during the rehab process. I often tell patients: If your pain is less than a 5 out of 10 (I know very subjective that’s why communication with your PT is key) and not worsening over time, it’s usually safe to keep going. This kind of pain is more like your body saying, “Hey, I’m still healing,” rather than screaming, “Stop immediately!”

When we avoid movement due to fear of pain, we can actually delay healing and reinforce dysfunctional patterns. Controlled, progressive loading is what helps tissue repair and regain strength. That doesn’t mean pushing through sharp, severe, or worsening pain, but mild, tolerable discomfort is often part of the path forward. Trust your plan, listen to your body, and lean on your PT to help you find that sweet spot between doing too much and not enough. Make sense? Email me if it doesn’t :)
