PT Handbook Conversation: What’s So Important About the Pelvic Floor?

When most people think about core strength, they picture abs. But there’s a powerful and often overlooked set of muscles that literally supports your entire foundation, your pelvic floor. These muscles play a vital role in bladder control, sexual function, posture, and even athletic performance. And yet, they’re rarely talked about unless someone is dealing with incontinence, pain during sex, or postpartum recovery. What we’re not taught is that pelvic floor dysfunction can affect anyone, not just postpartum women, and it’s often connected to issues like chronic back pain, hip tightness, and even poor breathing mechanics. And yea bros, it affects you too.

Pelvic floor physical therapy isn’t just about Kegels. In fact, many people are dealing with overactive, tense pelvic floors, not weak ones. A skilled pelvic PT assesses how your pelvic floor works with the rest of your body: your core, diaphragm, hips, and even your upper back. Stress, posture, and modern life’s go-go-go pace often lead us to hold tension in places we don’t even realize. That’s why techniques like breathwork, mobility drills, and gentle neuromuscular retraining are key to restoring balance. If you’ve ever felt like your body is “off” but can’t quite explain it...your pelvic floor might be the missing piece.
